Dr. Timothy Darrah, co-founder and CEO of Mangrove, took the Enterprise Stage at the Bitcoin for Corporations Symposium during Bitcoin 2026 in Las Vegas on April 27, 2026. The three-minute showcase introduced Mangrove’s approach to finding alpha in digital asset markets to an audience of institutional operators, investors, and corporate treasury teams.
The pitch: everyone’s looking for alpha the wrong way
Darrah opened with his background building AI systems for safety-critical environments, including work with NASA, Deloitte, and the U.S. Army, before founding Mangrove and joining the faculty at Vanderbilt University’s College of Connected Computing. The throughline: financial markets share the same characteristics as the high-risk, complex systems he spent his career studying.
He then walked the audience through Mangrove’s data. The company’s open-source signal library generates approximately 50,000 strategies per day. Filter that pool for strategies outperforming Bitcoin by 10%, and 1.6 million candidates shrink to 12.
“This is not the way to look for alpha,” Darrah said. “Everybody’s looking for alpha the wrong way.”
The key insight: Mangrove’s research analyzes 21 distinct market regimes. In 19 of them, Bitcoin dominates. But in two specific regimes, the team finds 300 times the number of high-performing strategies, and those strategies beat Bitcoin by 20% or more.
Marco Polo vs. hide-and-seek
Darrah closed with an analogy that stuck: most firms searching for alpha are playing Marco Polo at a sold-out EDM rave. Everyone’s yelling, the music is deafening, and you’re never going to find what you’re looking for.
Mangrove plays hide-and-seek. Fewer players, quieter conditions, and the team knows which rooms to check.
