Tim Darrah on AI Guardrails at Blockchain Futurist 2026
Mangrove Co-Founder and CEO Dr. Timothy Darrah sat down with Walter DeFi of DeFi Media at Blockchain Futurist Conference 2026 in Toronto, a few hours after presenting “Agentic AI Enablement: Challenges, Risks, and Opportunities” at the same event. The seven-minute conversation covers where Mangrove came from, how the platform uses AI during strategy development, and why the AI is decoupled before a strategy goes live.
Why You Should Listen In
Darrah explains the design decision at the center of the platform. Mangrove uses AI while a user is researching, building, and validating a strategy. Once that strategy is deployed, it runs inside a deterministic evaluation engine with position caps and risk controls written in. “No AI can hallucinate those things,” he tells DeFi Media. He also didn’t arrive at this from finance: Army veteran, former NASA Fellow, and an AI researcher and assistant professor at Vanderbilt University. That background shows up in how he talks about where automation is safe and where it isn’t.
What You Will Learn
A few things worth catching in the interview:
- How Mangrove started. Darrah wanted to launch a hedge fund. He went to a hedge fund conference, and the funds there asked to license his technology instead. Mangrove came out of that conversation.
- Where AI belongs in the workflow. The AI Copilot walks users from idea through validation. At deployment it steps out, and the deterministic engine takes over with guardrails and risk management under the hood.
- How capital gets allocated per strategy. Execution runs through a connected Kraken account with USDC as the quote token. Mangrove lets a user split one exchange balance across several strategies, and each strategy is aware of its own cap.
- What the marketplace does. Strategy creators publish to the marketplace, other users subscribe, and revenue is shared. Using the AI is optional.
- What Darrah said was coming. He said Mangrove was turning on TradeStation, Alpaca, and Public.com that week to support options and futures, and pointed to the tokenization of equities and ETFs as the reason to build beyond digital assets.
- How the team builds in public. Mangrove’s code is published on GitHub, where the open-source signal library, SDKs, and MangroveMarkets tooling all live, and Darrah encouraged viewers to go read it.
The Takeaway
Darrah’s version of the platform is straightforward: use the AI if you want it, skip it if you don’t, and the guardrails stay on either way. Watch the full interview above, then see the platform at mangrove.io.
